THE GLIDER science fair experiment on Air and its properties

Materials required: - paper, a pin or a paper clip or a thorn and scissors.
Fold the paper as shown in the figure. Draw dotted curves and cut along these lines. Bend the back end little to one side. Join the front part using a pin or thorn or a paper clip. Hold it at the back fold and shoot it in the air. See how it travels in the air. Try to throw it from a great height. This is called “The Glider”. You can play with this also.

Why does it float? The sharp front tears the sky and flies up. But the flat portion cannot come down immedia­tely. It floats in the air. The glider goes a little distance and descends. Before the discovery of aero plane man tried to fly with very broad artificial wings and jump from a great height.

PAPER ARROWS - Elementary Science Fair Project - Aerodynamics

PAPER ARROWS
Materials required: - paper.
Take a square paper and fold it as shown in the picture step by step. After fini­shing the sixth stage, hold the bottom of the 5 fold. Point the sharp edge away from you and throw it with a quick jerk in the air. See how like an arrow it shoots up and gradually glides down. You can play, “Whose arrow will fly the higher?
Which one will fly for a longer period?”

Why? It is easy for the point to prick and tear the air. It is not easy for the flat portion. A fish, a boat, an aero plane and even some race cars have a conical front for the same reason. Air Resistance science fair project - THE PARACHUTE

Materials required:- a big kerchief, twine and a small stone.

Take a big kerchief and tie about 25 cm. length of twine to each of its corners.  See that all knots are tight. “Clove hitch” knot will be the best. Knot the bottom, ends of all the four strings. Tie a small stone to the knot.. Fold the kerchief and roll it up with the sto­ne. Go to the open space where there is no one near. Throw the roll up in the air. Watch how it unfolds itself and comes down like an open umbrella slowly.
Similarly special silk cloth is folded with special strings and tied to air men. The jump from the moving aero plane. The silk arrangement opens and drops the airman safely on the ground. This umbrella like arrangement is called “parachute”. Every country has trained parachute so­ldiers ready to depute in the war-field and they are called parachutists. Food and other materials are being parachuted into the earthquake zone or flood affected regions.
What is the role played by air? Air cannot pierce through the cloth and hence it just supports. Earth pulls down the man from great height and he comes down slowly. This requires courage and systematic practice.
