Air Resistance science fair project - THE PARACHUTE

November 21st, 2006

Materials required:- a big kerchief, twine and a small stone.

Take a big kerchief and tie about 25 cm. length of twine to each of its corners.  See that all knots are tight. “Clove hitch” knot will be the best. Knot the bottom, ends of all the four strings. Tie a small stone to the knot.. Fold the kerchief and roll it up with the stone. Go to the open space where there is no one near. Throw the roll up in the air. Watch how it unfolds itself and comes down like an open umbrella slowly.
Similarly special silk cloth is folded with special strings and tied to air men. The jump from the moving aero plane. The silk arrangement opens and drops the airman safely on the ground. This umbrella like arrangement is called “parachute”. Every country has trained parachute soldiers ready to depute in the war-field and they are called parachutists. Food and other materials are being parachuted into the earthquake zone or flood affected regions.
What is the role played by air? Air cannot pierce through the cloth and hence it just supports. Earth pulls down the man from great height and he comes down slowly. This requires courage and systematic practice.
